A gorgeous living room can truly set your life on fire! For you, it is your daily personal oasis from your insane schedule. To your guests, it is a memorable experience into an exotic world. But how exactly do you create this space perfectly?
Don't stress, just follow our proven complete step-by-step system to transform your ordinary living area into an extraordinary space.
1. Buy a Badass Sofa
Before you decide on that badass sofa, define your focal point (TV/fireplace...) and traffic flow. Circulation within the living room should be direct as possible and yet not interfere with furniture placement. Next, measure room space. For formal rooms, pairs of sofas and/or chairs work really well. For a casual look, it's better to go with sectionals. Painters tape is a handy tool to visualize how the individual pieces will fit in a room before committing to purchase. My faves sources for seating are Joybird, Baker, CR Laine, West Elm, and Arhaus.
2. Dress Your Floors With A Rug
Using an area rug in the interior immediately adds elegance to the space. Rugs are acoustical and comprise the only flooring that absorbs sound. The most common types are wool and silk. Purchase a rug that is large enough to nest it about 10" under your sofa and side chairs. My faves sources for rugs are Loloi Rugs, Jaipur, Cost Plus World Market, Surya, and FLOR.
3. Make a Splash with Coordinating Furniture
To fully complete the living area, do yourself a favor and invent in coordinating pieces such as coffee table, end tables, and consoles. End tables and consoles are excellent for lighting. On your coffee table, you can have plants, candles, magazines, and much more! Use round coffee tables and pieces with curved lines to soften the feel of a room. Plants or vases on top of bookshelves and entertainment units help create balance in a room. My faves sources are Joss & Main, Serena & Lily, AllModern, and Dering Hall.
4. Divulge In Lighting
Lighting can make or break your living room design. Chandeliers create ambience. These beauties should be hung 30"-34" above table tops. Table lamps are placed on end tables to be available for activities such as puzzles, card games, or cleaning. A floor lamp provides ample lighting for reading and creates an attractive nook for relaxing. My faves resources are YLighting, Lumens, Currey & Co, and Urban Archaelogy.
5. Accessorize Last!
Accessorizing gives a room lots of character, but don't over do it! Choose accessories that have significant meaning to your such as family photos and artwork. Make certain that these pieces help pull colors from existing pieces such as your rug and side chairs. Using odd numbers of pieces are key! Items in 3's and 5's balance a room really well. Mirrors make a small room appear large, and are a great alternative to artwork. My faves sources are High Fashion, Kelly Wearstler, Home Goods, and At Home.
